Setting Up Your Store

Installing WooCommerce on your Website

The first and most important step of starting your store is getting WooCommerce integrated into your existing website (or having a custom website made from scratch).

We recommend WooCommerce because of how easy it is to use and how well it integrates into WordPress. Because it extends the base functionality of WordPress, it allows you to keep your existing website as-is and build the store on top of it. It’s also 100% free to use, so you’re able to start your store with minimal costs.

Before installing WooCommerce, it’s important to consider what type of features you’ll need. These include:

  1. The number of products you sell
  2. The type of products you sell
  3. How you plan on shipping your products
  4. The type of customers you’re targeting
  5. How your store to grow in the future

Considering these options will help you determine what extra plugins are required, what type of payment processor you need, how orders will be fulfilled, and what the overall design and layout of your store will look like. WooCommerce has many options to configure, so deciding these things early on will help avoid future problems.

Once all options are considered you can begin the process of installing WooCommerce. Because of the complexities around this, we suggest hiring a digital agency (whether that’s Freely Made or not) to assist with not only the installation, but also the design of the store.

The WooCommerce Store Setup Wizard

If you’d like to install WooCommerce yourself, click on the “Plugins” link in your WordPress admin and search for “WooCommerce”. Click “Install Now” and then “Activate”. WooCommerce will automatically take you to it’s setup wizard and ask you a series of questions including details abour your store’s location, currency, shipping and payment options.

After the installation is complete you’ll be ready to start adding your products and configuring other options.
